Our staff attended Mermaids certified training

On Friday 25th May, Amanda, Kerry and Lizzie attended a training course on Transgender Awareness run by the charity,

Mermaids, to increase their knowledge and create a more LGBTQ+ inclusive ethos. Mermaids is a charity that has been supporting transgender, nonbinary and gender-diverse children, young people, and their families since 1995. Mermaids are one of the UK’s leading LGBTQ+ charities, empowering thousands of people with its secure online communities, local community groups, helpline services, web resources, events and residential weekends.

Through doing the training, they were able to better understand gender issues and the challenges that may be faced by people on the transgender, nonbinary and gender-diverse spectrum and how as a charity, Move Momentum can help support them on their individual journeys.

"I found this a really helpful refresher on how to be as inclusive as possible to make everyone feel welcome."

During the training, Amanda, Kerry and Lizzie refreshed their knowledge about the different terms under the umbrella term 'transgender' and the different challenges they may face, from health care to hate crimes.

Move Momentum is committed to improving the inclusivity of the charity, therefore, on the back of this training, we will be implementing a few changes. Firstly, all teachers and assistants will introduce themselves and their pronouns to all new students, we will be developing our annual training to include more information on inclusivity so that we are better equipped to deal with any issues that might arise in our classes. We have also ordered name badges for all teachers and assistants that will include their pronouns and have the progress pride flag on them.

We're always looking for ways to make our classes and charity more welcoming and inclusive to everyone and are thrilled to have had this opportunity to learn from another amazing charity.
